JEHLANI NASIRA, BORN IN DEVIANT FORM

Jehlani Nasira is a Jersey-born multidisciplinary design professional and art educator known for her vast mediums including fashion, illustration, creative writing and brand design. Her work closely focuses on the oppressed body through various dimensions of gender constructs, sexuality, trauma, power and notions of self-discovery. She moved to New York after high school to further pursue her devotion for the arts in 2018, focusing on Graphic Design, Journalism and Communications at The College of Saint Rose. While here she was able to further expand her recurring themes of misrepresentations experienced by non-conforming groups in contemporary society by creating a voice through texture, abstraction, origami inspired silhouettes and hue in response to western assimilation. Following this post graduation, Nasira expanded her explorations to New Orleans, Louisiana, pursuing her belief in world-building through textiles and unity. Nasira's world is polyvalent yet the epitome of past and present, emblematic and abstraction, binary and non-binary, demolition and innovation. Today, the raconteur still continues to create brick by brick in the bayou through her fashion universe House of Asira.
